I didn't know Heming...Congratulations, Rosalie!<br />I didn't know Hemingway said those things about letting the subconscious do its work but it's the way I've always approached writing. Well, most of the time. I think a lot of writers do.<br />I started writing with a view to one day being published when I was fourteen, and it didn't take long for me to notice that when I concentrated and fretted and tried to come up with ideas, either the whole thing went away or I just came up with obvious, banal solutions.<br />I also noticed that when I forgot all about what I was writing, a really good and far more original idea would jump into my head from nowhere. So I started using that. When I got stuck on something, I deliberately forgot it, and either worked on something else entirely or concentrated on something that wasn't writing.<br />I'm not claiming that this is my wonderful, patented method. I think most writers and artists of all kinds do exactly the same thing in various ways: they let the subconscious in. You used to do it, as you realise, by being too busy to fret about your writing!<br />You see to fear that it's unscientific. I'd say it's just unexamined.
