But without the NBA I think we are all (publishers and authors) fighting a losing battle.

Readers today expect books to be cheap or free, and as a children's author who earns just enough to survive (those royalty rates you mention are typically less for children's books, because the cover price is lower), I can no longer afford to buy other authors' books at full cost price so I'm as glad of the discounts as anyone.

But I actually think ebooks will eventually raise the value of paper books, since there will be fewer published in paper format in the future. You only have to look at the prices being charged on amazon's marketplace for opp books that are still in demand... before I announced that my "I am the Great Horse" was going to be an ebook before Xmas, you couldn't buy a used copy for less than £40, and some copies wre listed at over £100! (Wouldn't mind if the author got a royalty from secondhand sales...)Katherine Robertshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17196712319655603442noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2429560125838989988.post-29564260676297604662012-08-30T10:35:02.528+01:002012-08-30T10:35:02.528+01:00As a long time advocate of Fair Trade I'm so h...As a long time advocate of Fair Trade I'm so happy that SOMEONE ELSE has said many of the things I bang on about. Fair Trade is a concept that should be more liberally applied and understood not just as a 'third world' issue. I've just stopped dancing with Amazon's GIVE IT AWAY game because the 'visibility' it gives is so transient. Gave away 400 copies of The Threads of Time last week. Sold 3 in the last month. But yes folks, it's up to us to practice what we preach and PAY FOR OUR EBOOKS. It's a fluid situation of course, but certainly raising issues such as fair trade for writers is a good way to keep engaged in the debate. And if anyone's interested I have a FAIR TRADE book - 5 Fairplay Dramas - available for under a quid on Amazon. It's knockabout humour BUT contained therein are the seeds of some interesting Fair Trade issues. Make Fair Trade YOUR choice - bananas, chocolate, coffee, tea, cotton AND ebooks!
