Interesting that one of those Armstrongs was first man on the moon, those reivers get everywhere. To 'rive' means to tear away from or tear off, it was used often in the north east when I was a bairn, clearly a survival of word reiver. The Grahams were another such clan and caused so much trouble, they were eventually booted out of the whole border region. After a while, some 'new' people called 'Maharg' started appearing in the area...
