The modern tradition (I suppose Jacqueline Wilson is the most obvious example) of absent/dysfunctional parents has a similar role. Children have less freedom now than ever, ironically, yet just as much danger if not more. My mother was always very critical of the royal family parenting style! my parents were wonderful but I sometimes longed to be neglected a bit and 'given money to go to the pictures just to get rid of them'!Lydia Bennethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09328239009863878547noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2429560125838989988.post-8595651097370154932014-03-15T11:19:52.976+00:002014-03-15T11:19:52.976+00:00Great post, Jan, and a fine - and absolutely deser...Great post, Jan, and a fine - and absolutely deserved - tribute to some wonderful books. I bought Nelson as soon as I heard of it and long before this blog, so my conscience is clear. Julia, what a lovely, honest and moving comment that was.. Yes, it's a great trilogy that has four books in it. When you reach the septology you'll have surveyed probably the whole human condition. So please keep it going.Dennis Hamleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15781139870037634374noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2429560125838989988.post-4873240791718096222014-03-15T10:22:05.044+00:002014-03-15T10:22:05.044+00:00Two more books to add to my 'to-read' list...Two more books to add to my 'to-read' list; I'll go and download them at once!Mari Biellahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14221256993468150226noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2429560125838989988.post-4761769267962299422014-03-15T09:07:14.692+00:002014-03-15T09:07:14.692+00:00Been for a walk to think about what Jan said (and ...Been for a walk to think about what Jan said (and get over it - though still feeling a little shaken). Unlike Jan I was born immediately into the fortunate, yacht-owning classes and to this day am teased mercilessly for the way I speak - especially by my youngest child who currently never misses a meal time to have a go at me for my 'posh' background. So the first thing I'd like to say is that one can look as if one 'belongs' but still feel as confused, miserable and insecure as the next child. To set against that, however, I DO know I've always been as lucky as hell and the time that really brought that home to me was when I worked for the WEA (Workers Educational Association) and got to know children in refuges, families under the cosh of the state, some learning disabled parents and some families with fathers in prison. Finally I will mention that people who KNOW with utter confidence how to mend engines and sail boats continue to inspire me with awe and I'm probably rather glad that I never did meet Ransome!julia joneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09773900100240758504noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2429560125838989988.post-31148242610527821052014-03-15T08:31:49.468+00:002014-03-15T08:31:49.468+00:00shall purchase Nelson, and perhaps you could put t...shall purchase Nelson, and perhaps you could put this lovely piece about Julia's fab books on EE as a review?
