Very moving post Andrew. I don't know about ice exactly but I think a writer needs a certain detachment to be able to create something outside ourselves which will reach other people. Sometimes it can feel rather guilt-inducing, as when in the middle of a tragic or emotional time, you find yourself making a mental note of an observation.
