I grew up with native American red mulberry trees, several of them, though my mum always complained at not having removed the one overhanging our terrace without ever bringing herself to do so. In Africa I planted several of the red berry sort (no idea which precise variety), and spread them round amongst friends and neighbours. They were terribly easy and fast to grow -- a single branch stuck into the soil resulted in a healthy small tree the following year. And now I've got one growing in Germany, and am perfectly happy to put up with the blue-stained bare feet in summer and the wasps. Mulberry juice, mulberry crumble, mulberry ice cream or sorbet, mulberry jam -- or just plain fresh mulberries. Frankly, I don't believe for a moment that Adam fancied an apple.

One word of caution to anyone considering planting a mulberry tree: its wood is definitely fragile and splinters easily, so it's not a good idea to encourage children to climb (nor adults, for that matter). We had a near accident with a teen who didn't pay attention to my strictures, a large limb breaking off under her while she climbed.

OneLeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13770069472552779217noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2429560125838989988.post-16406475961835034082016-07-03T16:56:04.186+01:002016-07-03T16:56:04.186+01:00All the very best of luck, Umberto, in fighting fo...All the very best of luck, Umberto, in fighting for your beautiful tree and its many occupants. In our last house we had big trees outside and people who wanted to park on the pavement verges would often try to have them cut down - and even in my house now, I too have a 'shared tree' between me and neighbours, the only big tree in the relatively new street, with white blossoms, and then red berries, as well as birds nesting among the leaves, and I"m constantly approached by 'tree surgeons' offering to cut it down for me!
