Mobiles and Magic -- Misha Herwin

I’m a great one for mislaying my mobile, which set me musing recently about our attitude to our phones.

Some time ago I was faced with the prospect of having to go into town WITHOUT MY PHONE as Mike was expecting a call from the clinic and they had my mobile number not his.

The horror of this situation did not bear thinking about, so plan B had to be put into action: i.e. I would have his phone and he would have mine, so any emergency I might have to deal with on a fifteen minute walk to the library could be coped with.

If this all sounds somewhat over dramatic, it shows how reliant we are on these devices.  Years ago, you went shopping, or out for the day, or even away for a weekend, or on holiday, without feeling the need to have the means of instant communication at your fingertips.

Of course there were times when being able to summon help was useful. I remember coming back from swimming one evening with my three kids in the car and having a puncture on a lonely country road. Nowadays you’d ring whichever rescue service you were with but then not having a phone I simply walked to the nearest house and explained the situation. The people there were lovely and we waited inside until the AA arrived to change the wheel.

Mobiles however rely on a signal and what happens if that fails?

This is the situation Poppy and Amelia have to face in “Yet More Adventures of Poppy and Amelia.”

Luckily for them, the two apprentice witches have the advantage of being able to use magic and after consulting the truculent Witches’ Handbook they come up with a solution.

Yes, and who controls those signals??? Scary stuff!
I used to be famous (notorious) in our family for never having my phone with me and never answering it even if it happened to be nearby. However when I came out of hospital after breaking my hip, the son who lives with me laid down the law and I'm now not to go downstairs, or come back up again in fact, without my phone. I've taken to carrying a whole bag of stuff around with me now so quite often I'll have a Kindle, a writing notebook, biscuits or a Mars Bar in it as well as the phone, so it's actually proved quite useful.
