Wimbledon Bookfest -- Joy Kluver

Autumn always brings lots of literary festivals and my local one is Wimbledon Bookfest. They've opted to stay dry this year and have moved down the hill from the tents on the Common to Wimbledon Library and Wimbledon Girls' High School. The festival is quite eclectic and has a range of authors, such as, Clive Myrie, Alexander McCall Smith, Philippa Gregory, Sebastian Faulks and Katherine Rundell.

I'll be there on Saturday 21st October at 4pm, chatting to Janice Hallett, author of The Appeal, The Twyford Code and The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels. If you've read any of Janice's books, then you'll know that she has a unique style of writing. I'm hoping to find out how she manages to write this way!

i'd certainly go to see Katherine Rundell. I have her brilliant and recent biography of John Donne, my favourite poet, and would have lots of questions.

  The list of people who I have published is starting to become substantial. One of those books is the wonderful ECHOES FROM THE HOCKER HOUSE by Virginia Watts . Virginia lives in Pennsylvania, in fact she grew up there, and so did I, which may be a small reason why her stories so resonated with me, because they channel the "something" that is the more rural parts of the very large, primarily rural state. My dad was from coal country, and there is something unique to being from coal country. Virginia's stories capture this very well. A little bit about the book from our side, the publishing side, My husband, David Yurkovich , and I are the entirerty of the company, or, I should say, we were, until we added some short-form/poetry/ writers/artists/experimentors on board as volunteer collaborators.   I should have come by boat, of course. The one-way street leading down to the river at Hamble-le-Rice, near Southampton, is as narrow and steep as anyone might expect, who knows the ways of riverside villages. I thought of Pin Mill, I thought of Wivenhoe and Maldon. You can probably think of many more. I Wish I May, I wish I Might... Understand What These Writers Are Saying says Griselda Heppel

It so happens that May is a singularly appropriate month for the following grammar grumble. Call me a pedant - sorry, madam, no pedant available just now but more will be arriving shortly ( cue howls of joyous mirth ) - but Things Have Got to a Pretty Pass. No, really.  Winston Churchill: a ban on prepositions ending sentences was a practice up with which he would not put. It’s not about split infinitives. Nor about prepositions not being allowed at the ends of sentences (up with which Winston Churchill famously refused to put). Nothing can be done with ‘she spoke to my friend and I’, I’m afraid, except to stand doggedly by me and try not to wince when others don’t. Thing is, all these infelicities (though the preposition rule is not an infelicity, Churchill was right there) don’t muddle meanings.  Dooley Wilson, Ingrid Bergman, "Play it, Sam." 1942 I turn 87 on the 16th of this month. That means I was five years old when Ilsa Lund asked Sam to play As Time Goes By . No wonder I've been a lifelong romantic (who writes about time travel a lot.) I vaguely remember first seeing Casablanca at a theatre with my mother. She elbowed me from a Hershey-bar stupor to see one of her Hollywood bit-actor friends, Frank Puglia, as a Moroccan vendor selling Ingrid Bergman a scarf. I posted about Puglia here in 2020. (See " The Phantom of Dream Streets .") It was 1943. I was a precocious kid who could read the funnies and the headlines of newspapers delivered to our front steps every day.
