A place to write, in the right place? by Debbie Bennett

So after  May's post about conservatories and scaffolding , I can report that the new conservatory is rather impressive. Wickes had an offer on decking, so we did that at the same time too. Getting the glass roof in place required the help of a friend who had the sucky-pad things they use to handle glass (in return Andy fixed the electrics in his mobile chip van - the complexities of small village living in England!). Carpet went down last week and we've just ordered a small sofa bed, so finally we will have useable extra room with a nice view of the garden and somewhere to go with my laptop. I've noticed over the past six months or so that I've stopped using my desktop pc completely. When we moved here, I couldn't contemplate not having my own desk, with my little supply of pens/stationery/desk tat. It was bad enough giving up my study. But then we had covid and we were all working from home, and even though I had a desk in the dining room end of the lounge, I ende...

My writing cave - by Tara Lyons

The start of the New Year inspired some authors to share images on Faceboook of the views from their writing area. There were some truly beautiful pictures – which made me yearn more for a holiday than writing time… but that’s probably just me. These views were also a huge contrast to the one I have, and it got me thinking – does our surroundings unintentionally influence the genre we choose to write? I always think writing by the sea is very special. UK or abroad, to me, it just looks beautiful and calming and inspirational. It’s easy to see why so many of those authors who shared images like these write about romance, or humorous situations, or family life and children’s books. You can almost taste the salty sea-breeze from their novels.   My writing space is one half of my bedroom. I set it up last year after I self-published my de...

Where We Work (Part One) - Joint Post

At  Electric Authors we're a varied bunch writing  everything from crime to humour to self-help. The way we work is also as varied as the places we work. So three EA bloggers have decided to band together and share where we work on todays post.           Karen Bush - visit website   Over the years I’ve worked in all sorts of places: at our last house I actually had the luxury of an office. OK, it was only 6 by 8 foot, but it’s amazing how much you can cram in. When we moved to the current house I was in the middle of writing a book: no time to unpack – I just set up shop in the corner of the sitting/dining area, and although not originally intended, have been there ever since. My partner gritted his teeth and set up a desk unit and some cupboard units that he felt he could live with as furniture, and it’s perfect. I have a view into the front garden where I can watch the fish and frogs frolicking in the pond, s...
