Title: Katherine Roberts - Enchanting Worlds and Magical Words

Introduction: Step into a world where magic dances through the pages and adventures await around every corner – that's the enchanting realm created by the beloved children's author, Katherine Roberts. With her boundless imagination and gift for storytelling, Katherine has woven tales that transport young readers to wondrous lands and spark their own creativity.

Katherine: I’m rather enjoying it so far :-)

ChatGPT

Early Beginnings: Born with a twinkle of magic in her eyes, Katherine Roberts grew up in a charming village nestled between rolling hills and whispering woods. As a child, she was a curious explorer, always seeking hidden treasures in her backyard and weaving stories about the mystical creatures that might inhabit them. Little did she know that these childhood adventures would lay the foundation for her future as a renowned author.

Katherine: This isn’t too bad! I did indeed grow up in a village, however the 'whispering woods' were mostly windswept beaches (we were in Cornwall) and the 'rolling hills' were mountains of China Clay. The hidden treasures probably refer to the weird creatures I discovered in rock pools, and the mystical creatures are obviously the unicorns that I was certain lived in the racing stables opposite our house and escaped one night leaving ghostly hoof prints across my dad’s new lawn.

Journey to the Written Word: As Katherine grew older, her love for storytelling deepened. She embarked on a quest to learn the art of crafting tales that could captivate young minds. With a heart full of dreams and a pen in hand, she honed her writing skills and transformed her imaginative ideas into magical stories.

Katherine: Hmm, yes, I am just about old enough to have started with a pen in hand, but soon moved on to a typewriter (manual) and then a computer with word processing software. As for the learning quest… you couldn’t do Creative Writing at university back in those days, so I did a BSc in Mathematics instead, and kept my dreams of being a published author locked in my heart for many years.

Mystical Worlds and Characters: Katherine's stories are like keys that unlock doors to extraordinary realms. From ancient castles to mysterious forests, her words paint vivid landscapes where heroes and heroines embark on quests of bravery and friendship. Meet talking animals, wise wizards, mischievous fairies, and more – each character is a friend waiting to be discovered.

Katherine: Fair enough, though these realms and characters probably appear in most fantasy books… and I can’t quite remember where I put all those mischievous fairies?

Notable Adventures: Among her enchanting works, Katherine has penned tales that have become cherished classics in the realm of children's literature. Join her on a journey to Camelot in the "Enchanted Quest" series, where knights and magic come alive. Or set sail with daring pirates and magical islands in the "Pendragon Legacy" series, where bravery knows no bounds.

Katherine: ChatGPT is correct that I’ve written about Camelot with knights and magic in my PENDRAGON LEGACY series, though as far as I know the “Enchanted Quest” series was written by another author with a completely different name. Magical islands and pirates do appear in my Echorium books, however, so there are some facts in here somewhere, though I'm rather upset ChatGPT makes no mention of my historical fiction or my most popular book I AM THE GREAT HORSE!

Inspiring Imagination: Katherine Roberts' stories are more than just words on pages – they're keys that unlock the doors of imagination. Through her books, she encourages young readers to believe in themselves, embrace their unique qualities, and embark on their own quests. Her magical worlds remind us all that within our hearts lies the power to shape our destinies.

Katherine: I like to think this is true... but if a book speaks to you, this could be true of any other author, too.

ChatGPT

Legacy of Wonder: Katherine's dedication to kindling the flames of creativity in young hearts has earned her a special place in the world of children's literature. Her books continue to be treasured by generations, inspiring new storytellers and igniting the love of reading.

Katherine: ChatGPT might have a point here. My author career started in 1999 with SONG QUEST winning the inaugural Branford Boase Award, so it's true that several generations of young readers have since enjoyed my fiction. And I know of at least one young fan of my earlier books who is now a published writer and illustrator in her own right. However, the same could be said of many other authors who have been publishing for long enough.

ChatGPT

Conclusion: In the world of children's literature, Katherine Roberts shines as a guiding star, leading readers on journeys of wonder and discovery. Her stories remind us that the magic of imagination knows no bounds, and through her words, she invites us all to step into her enchanting worlds and embark on adventures that will forever live within our hearts.

Katherine: Much as I enjoy being called a ‘guiding star’, this bio shows the amazing ability of AI to sound as if it knows exactly what it is talking about without actually telling us anything we don't already know. This biography could have been written by a politician trying to answer an unwanted question! It definitely needs an editor (human)... and do I see a split infinitive in that last line?

Thanks for an entertaining piece Katherine which made me smile.
Made me smile as well, Peter :-)

The dilemma is this: do I re-open the chat and "train" ChatGPT to write a more accurate bio for Katherine Roberts children's author, or leave it to struggle? Someone else might ask it the same question, and it seems like a good idea to have it at least mention one or two of my books, rather than some other random author's books...

Er, has anyone yet mentioned to ChatGPT the Less Is More idea? It all felt like a huge pink-iced rainbow unicorn birthday cake from a large retailer, satiating a potential reader with sugar before she's even opened a book. Not the impression you want to leave!

Also, I thought 20 years was a generation (60, in some historical calculations) so saying you've inspired generations of children to become authors implies Great Age on your part, which is impudent of the bot, to say the least.
Ha yes, it is a very sugary-sweet bio!

Hmm, so 20 years equals a generation... well, my first novel was published in 1999, and I was publishing short fiction 10 years before that so ChatGPT is not totally wrong. And if the teenagers who were inspired by my early books in 2000 went on to have kids who are now old enough to read my younger fiction, that's technically two generations... I doubt ChatGPT thought about it that deeply, however, as it only took about 3 seconds to write the whole rainbow unicorn bio!
UPDATE (Nov 23):
Out of interest, I recently deleted my original biography with ChatGPT and asked it to write another one for me from scratch. This time, it came up with several of my book titles and was more accurate. There were still a few mistakes and omissions, but in less than 3 months ChatGPT has clearly "learnt" a lot more about me and my books.

How? The AI did not learn directly from me, since I did not correct or comment on its original bio during our original 'chat'. I can only think it recognised the gap in its knowledge and corrected this by trawling the internet, including this blog post, for more information about me... Worrying? Or something to celebrate?
